John
Magnie
Saturday,
December 3rd, 2005
Highlands House Concerts hosted singer-songwriter, John Magnie, who has graced the performances and
recordings with Shawn Colvin, Anders Osborne, Bonnie Raitt, Keb Mo', Amy
Grant and Sam Bush to name just a few. John is best known
for his great songs and trademark accordion performances with the Subdudes
- the band he started back in 1987, which has recently regrouped and is
touring to sell-out crowds across the country.
Since the late 90's, John has also released a solo CD and three CD's as
the 3 Twins, which includes Subdudes members Tim Cook and Steve Amedee.
These recordings show his mastery of mixing musical genres on piano,
soulful vocals with engaging lyrics, and some of the most memorable vocal
melodies, harmonies and grooving band tracks. |

| December
3rd, I got a call from Mr. John Magnie (he of
the Subdudes and 3 Twins fame!) inviting
me to a small solo show he was performing that night, for a super-cool
organization called Highlands House Concert Series.
I’ve heard of the “House Concert” concept, but never attended one,
so this was a great opportunity to “go see”. I now know that there are
many House Concerts going on in our fair state, so much so, that there is
a website of the locations www.denverhouseconcerts.com
and www.coloradohouseconcerts.com
and they feature world-class musicians in a comfortable, “close-up”
setting for both artist and patron.
The concert
I attended was put on by Mr. Dwight Mark, www.dwightmark.com
who has been pursuing this love of his for quite some time now. It was
billed as a solo show, but before the evening was over, John performed
duets with Dwight, duets with Mr. Rich Moore, and an
improv jam of a great Ray Charles tune with myself, international
songstress Mollie O’Brien, singer/songwriter and local
fave Ms. Marcy Baruch, and another guest attending the
show (there are great pix of our time together on the Denver House
Concerts site- Go see!!) John is one of those rare musicians who will not
hesitate to share the stage with anyone he thinks will add to the positive
vibe and fun of a show, so by the end of the evening, there had been an
amazing amount of musical exploration! The beauty of this type of show is
that there are only a small number of tickets sold for each show, so the
“intimate feel” is not lost. I encourage all of you, at some time or
other in this coming year, to attend a House Concert and experience it for
yourself. The next Highlands series will feature Rich Moore and folk
phenoms The Winstons. Need I say more??? Do it now, and
you’ll thank yourself later!!!

| The John Magnie house concert was
a very fun and different way to spend an evening.
It was a nice alternative to seeing a concert in a smoky
venue. The atmosphere was
very comfortable and friendly, which I’m sure helps the performer relax,
even a veteran musician like John. I
know I’ll be back for more of Dwight’s house concerts and I would
highly recommend them to anyone else as well!
Thank you to Dwight and John for a great night!

fantastic. That was truly one of the most memorable concerts I have
been to. Thanks again for hosting.
